Full Bore Target Rifle

Taunton Deane Shooting Association (TDSA) is proud to offer Full Bore Rifle shooting, one of the most historic and challenging shooting disciplines in the world. Our club embraces the rich heritage of this sport, which dates back to the founding of the National Rifle Association in 1860. At TDSA, our members have the opportunity to test their skills and compete in this prestigious discipline.

Targets and Distances At TDSA, our Full Bore Rifle shooters engage circular targets with concentric scoring rings from the prone position (lying down). Our club offers a range of distances, typically spanning from 300 yards to 1000 yards, allowing our members to progressively challenge themselves and refine their marksmanship abilities.

Mastering the Art of Shooting To excel in Full Bore Rifle shooting, our members must master the fundamental principles of marksmanship. These include maintaining a stable position, achieving natural alignment, and executing smooth trigger control. By honing these skills, our shooters strive to place all their shots as close to the center of the target as possible.

Battling the Elements One of the unique challenges of Full Bore Rifle shooting at TDSA is the exposure to the elements. Our shooters must not only possess excellent technique but also develop the ability to judge changes in wind strength and direction. Adapting to these variables is crucial for maximising scores and achieving consistent performance. Our club provides a supportive environment where members can learn and practice these essential skills.

Equipment and Calibre At TDSA, our Full Bore Rifle competitors use single-shot bolt action rifles similar in design to small bore rifles. However, the key difference lies in the calibre, which is 7.62 mm (.308″). This larger calibre enables our shooters to utilise higher-powered rounds, necessary for accurately engaging targets at the extended distances we offer. In keeping with the traditional spirit of the discipline, our club adheres to the use of open iron sights, forgoing telescopic sights.

Individual Skill and Responsibility In individual Full Bore Rifle shooting at TDSA, each competitor is responsible for every aspect of their performance. From taking the shot to judging the wind and maintaining an accurate plot of their shoot, our members must rely on their own skills and decision-making abilities. This individual responsibility adds an extra layer of challenge and satisfaction to the shooting experience.
